I was sound asleep and enjoying a good dream about the
roads to come when I heard a voice calling my name. Was that God asking for tips on
cornering? There it was again. Bugger, its James. He’s at the window and wants to come in. For a split second I thought about rolling
over and ignoring him but then thought better of it and opened up. In truth it was good to see him again.
We hadn’t set an alarm to give James a chance to catch
up on sleep. It turned out that we had
both been lying there, awake, thinking that the other wanted a lie-in. Once we clocked this we were up and Gavin dug
into his UK food cache to cook up an epic breakfast. With that demolished in short order we were
ready to ride.
Romania has some awesome roads and off-road
routes. If you have a bike that can take
a bit of an off-road then it’s a great laugh.
If not, then its unpleasant and unworkable and sadly the only access to the
Black Sea is off-road or main road/motorway.
That meant 7 hours of unpleasant, full throttle riding through the heat.
When we arrived in Constanta it was a bit of a let-down. The whole place is a commercial port and
access to the sea is limited so we headed south towards the Bulgarian boarder
and found a beach and, with it, a place to dip our toes in the water. That’s the first part of the mission accomplished. Some 82 hours after leaving Pirbright we had
made it to the Black Sea.
Our next problem was finding somewhere to camp. The beaches are too crowded so they were
ticked off, the campsites looked to expensive for a short stay so we headed
back along our route and James found a place that looked like it would do the
job.
It was all going well until I started cooking and the
mosquitoes descended, James wasn’t touched and I was all but drunk dry. That’ll be fun in the morning.
